Belgium, Brussels, 8 January 2009

On the 8th of January 2009 PACKED vzw and KMKG/MRAH organised a national ATHENA workshop at the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, Belgium. The targeted audience were Belgian ATHENA content providers, government delegates, Belgian EuropeanaLocal delegates and other interested parties (such as Belgian museums not yet active in the project). The goal was to inform the content partners about the ATHENA-project (goals, actions, work packages, ...), to get an idea why the content partners joined the project and what they expect from it and to establish a personal relation with the content partners in order to create a good base for future actions within the project.

The workshop started off with an introduction by the director of the Royal Museum of Art and History, since the meeting took place in their conference room. Next was a presentation on ATHENA itself (goals, actions, WPs) by Barbara Dierickx (PACKED vzw), followed by a presentation on Europeana and its satellite projects by Chris De Loof (KMKG/MRAH), illustrated by a live search in the prototype. After a short break a round table took place; each participant introduced himself and his institution/collection. This was followed by a Q&A session, with various questions from the content partners and other attendees answered by PACKED vzw & KMKG/MRAH. Before closing, further timing and actions within the project were illustrated.

The workshop achieved the aimed result; PACKED vzw & KMKG/MRAH were able to get to know the content partners, not only as institutions but also in a more face to face way. This will improve further cooperation. The participants shared their knowledge about and experience in projects on digital cultural heritage with each other; Belgian institutions are also involved in other European projects than ATHENA. Some partners did not know of the existence of some of Europeana's satellite projects, now they do. There was an exchange of ideas and suggestions among the partners.
