The Workshop aims at presenting the action lines of the new European Project ATHENA, started in November 2008 and contributing to the creation of Europeana, the European Digital Library.

ATHENA will develop the MINERVA results in the field of the harmonization of standards and guidelines, building upon the experience developed with MICHAEL and CulturaItalia in the field of the implementation, and carrying on in the direction of the interoperability, the semantic Web and the quality services for the final user.

A representative of the STERNA European project was invited to introduce the initiative.

On this basis, ATHENA will harmonize at European level terminology, cataloguing and descriptive standards for the digital resources produced by museums and other cultural Institutions, with the aim of contributing effectively to the process of construction of Europeana.

Thanks to ATHENA the presence of the heritage data bases in Europeana will be enhanced, expecially those of the museums.

ATHENA is coordinated by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, managed by the Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and Bibliographic Information (ICCU) in collaboration with the Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation (ICCD). The consortium is formed by Ministries, Universities , Museums, and by other cultural agencies of 22 countries.
